Thea van Schalkwyk

Thea van Schalkwyk holds two art degrees and has 17 years of experience in art promotion and curatorship, both locally and abroad. She manages the business, the new sophisticated gallery and the business network. She coordinates art consulting projects and subcontracts various fields of expertise.

She was born in Cape Town in 1967 and obtained the BA (ED) FA degree in 1989 and the Hons (Art History) in 1994 from the University of Pretoria. Thea was a member of the editorial committee: 1 2 3 Dimensions (Mouthpiece of the Dept. of Fine Art and Art History, University of Pretoria) in 1989 and Committee Member: AIESEC (International Inter University Society) and held the portfolio: Liaison with Foreign Representatives.  She represents the University of Pretoria at the  National Conference, University of Zululand, KwaZulu/Natal) in 1989.

In 1990 she lived in Cologne, Germany, assisting a noted artist and doing research.   From end of 1990 to end of 1993 she taught art in Pretoria, after which she entered in a joint partnership art consulting firm with an acclaimed reputation.   Thea’s main job functions in the business was: acting as independent art consultant to  private art collectors and major competitive  corporations and organizations. Duties included administration of business and liaison with  artists, clients, press and public. She has contributed a document called ‘ Art Education and Training in South Africa -  Design and Technology:  A Proposal ‘ (1994) which was  presented as part of the White Paper to the Minister of Art, Culture, Science and Technology, in the process of  restructuring the Mission for Art  in  South Africa.  

Further relevant experiences include the following : 1993 – exhibited at the South African Trade Expo in  Singapore, presented by SAFTO; 1994 - organized exhibition in Philadelphia, USA, “ Art out of Isolation “ from RSA and subsequent first visit to USA, appointed as South African Regional Director  to the IASG ( International Artists Support Group ) with Board seated in Washington DC, USA,  and guest teacher : Immigrant School, Toronto, Canada; 1995 - Acting Art Teacher, Pretoria Boys’ High School and Pretoria Girls’ High School, Pretoria, South Africa; 1997 - One Day Workshop with children from Mamelodi  (near Pretoria)( art awareness program ); 1998 - One Day  Workshop with children from  Witbank informal settlement (art  awareness program) and curator of ‘South Africa represented’: Washington DC , in collaboration with the IASG; 1999 – appointed as managing curator of the Old Arts Gallery, University of Pretoria  ( founding of first commercial art gallery on a university campus in South Africa) ; 2001 - two television appearances on ‘Kunskafee’ ( Kyknet ) and advised and consulted with producers on artists’ profiles;    2003 -   guest lecturer at  Graduate School of Management, UP , and was interviewed by Beeld and Burger newspapers for Entrepreneur/Business pages;  2004 – joined the Gauteng North Chamber of Commerce and Industry as member ;  2005 – ends curatorship at University of Pretoria to pursue private consulting and broader curatorship,  curates ‘ South African Art 1 and 2 ” at Voortrekker Monument Heritage Site, invited to attend Golf Day for companies hosted by Mrs. Z. Mbeki at the Presidential Guest House in Pretoria.

In 2005 Thea van Schalkwyk launched new business  ARTCASE INC.  The business offers specialized service in art project management,  marketing and promotion of SA art,  valuation and  assessment  of  art collections and assisting art collectors with their  collections. In 2006 the business was Finalist :  Business Awards from the GNCCI .  From 2008 the business also offers or facilitates art appreciation sessions and art workshops. In 2008 the business took part in the prestigious launch of new car of a leading auto manufacturer.  To date  Thea has curated  over  200  art exhibitions:  locally and abroad (details available). 

The business believes in a holistic approach to art experience.
